JO bus service seeks funding for expanding hours and routes

The Johnson County Transportation Council has asked the commission to consider adding $2.15 million to its $13 million budget in 2016 to add more frequent stops, more territory and limited evening hours to some routes, while increasing the range and lessening restrictions on its Special Edition service for those disabled or 65 or older.

Prairie Village approves plan for Meadowbrook redevelopment

The Prairie Village City Council voted unanimously Monday to approve a memorandum of understanding with the parties involved in redevelopment of the 136-acre Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club.

The agreement calls for the city to purchase 88 acres of the site for $5.5 million to $7 million, finance $5 million to $6 million worth of park improvements on that land, and deed the 88 acres to Johnson County Park and Recreation District for use as a county park.

The roughly 40 remaining acres will be developed by Kansas City-based VanTrust and Wichita-based Legend Senior Living. In April, VanTrust announced plans to sell about 8 acres southeast of 91st Street and Nall Avenue to Legend for the development of an $80 million senior living facility. VanTrust is planning to develop single-family homes, luxury apartments, townhomes and a boutique inn — Prairie Village’s first hotel — on the site.

Urban living, art center projects could give downtown Overland Park a cooler vibe

At its meeting Monday evening, the city council took action on several projects — a popular art center and three mixed-use developments —that could breathe a hipper energy into the shopping district.

The council kicked off the evening by approving a funding agreement with InterUrban ArtHouse for a one-time grant of $162,500, which will help with the purchase of the downtown Overland Park Post Office building.

Later in the meeting, the council approved a public hearing to consider whether a redevelopment district should be created for a major mixed-use development project, called The Vue, which is proposed for 80th and Marty.

City gives Glenwood Plaza redevelopment a $20M boost

The Overland Park City Council on Monday approved more than $20 million in incentives for The Promontory, a $97.5 million mixed-use redevelopment project at the northeast corner of 91st Street and Metcalf Avenue.

The council also approved rezoning and a development plan for the project, setting the stage for construction to begin in January.

There’s a really ‘big box’ in the Metcalf South replacement plan

Some neighbors have expressed qualms, but developers say a “big box” store is essential to their rebirth plan for the defunct Metcalf South Shopping Center.

A 60-acre, $324 million revival project, dubbed Central Square, envisions shops, offices, residences and public spaces for both sides of 95th Street east of Metcalf Avenue. It’s a multi-use plan that dovetails with Overland Park’s broader “Vision Metcalf” guidelines.

JoCo Gateway hits milestones, faces uncertain funding future

On Tuesday morning, the Kansas Department of Transportation and leaders of cities connected to the massive $600 million highway improvement project celebrated the completion of two big milestones: the opening of a diverging diamond-style interchange at the intersection of Kansas Highway 10 and Ridgeview Road and the upgrade of a one-mile stretch of College Boulevard from a two-lane to four-lane street from Renner Road to Ridgeview. In addition, KDOT expects a new two-lane flyover bridge connecting eastbound K-10 to northbound Interstate 435 to open to all traffic in early August.

The work is part of the $288 million second phase of the three-phase Gateway project, which will expand the capacity of the K-10/I-435/Interstate 35 corridor. Every day, more than 230,000 vehicles converge on the interchange that connects Overland Park, Olathe and Lenexa.

Main Event strikes again with bowling-anchored center in Olathe

Main Event Entertainment LP received a special-use-permit and approval of its final plan Tuesday for a 50,000-square-foot bowling-anchored entertainment center in the Olathe Gateway shopping center.

The $15 million project, which the Olathe City Council advanced with two unanimous votes, will be the second Main Event Entertainment Center in the Kansas City area and the second located next to a Bass Pro Shop.

Bass Pro anchors Olathe Gateway, which is located along the west side of Interstate 35 at the southwest corner of 119th Street and Kansas City Road. In May, Main Event Entertainment announced plans for its first Kansas City-area center near the Bass Pro Shop at Interstates 70 and 470 in Independence.

OP office building will get new life, new ‘skin’ after Black & Veatch’s exit

Significant Class A office construction is proposed in South Johnson County to address rising demand and scarce large blocks of space.

But Tower Properties believes there’s another way to skin that cat.

Tower, which owns and/or manages a portfolio of about 4 million square feet of commercial properties in the Kansas City and St. Louis areas, is planning to spend about $20 million to completely renovate, revitalize and reskin its six-story 101,000-square-foot office building at 6601 College Blvd.

Developer picks contractor for $8.5M downtown OP apartments

Market Lofts, a long-planned mixed-use development in downtown Overland Park, finally is moving toward construction.

Merriam-based general contractor 2Point Construction Co. has signed on to be the general contractor for the $8.9 million apartment building and retail space to be built on what’s a vacant lot at the intersection of 80th and Marty streets. The project is being developed by Paul Goehausen, managing principal for Goehausen & Co., who has been working on the project for almost a decade.
